Frequently Asked Questions
-
Do I need a physician's referral to start physical therapy?
Texas allows direct access to physical therapy, meaning you can be evaluated and treated by a licensed physical therapist without a physician's referral for a limited period. However, some insurance plans may still require a referral for coverage. We recommend checking with your insurance provider. Our team can help you navigate this process.
-
What should I bring to my first appointment?
Please bring your photo ID, insurance card, any relevant medical records or imaging reports, a list of current medications, and your completed intake forms if you downloaded them in advance. Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area being treated.
-
How long does each session last?
Initial evaluations typically last 60 to 90 minutes. Follow-up treatment sessions generally run 45 to 60 minutes, depending on your individualized plan of care.
-
Will my insurance cover physical therapy?
HealthMasters works with many insurance plans. Coverage varies by plan, so we encourage you to contact our office before your first visit — our staff can verify your benefits and explain any out-of-pocket costs.
-
What conditions do you treat?
We treat a wide range of musculoskeletal and systemic conditions, including neck pain, shoulder pain, hand and wrist pain, low back pain, spinal stenosis, hip pain, knee pain, foot and ankle pain, arthritis, whiplash, vertigo, sprains and strains, and fibromyalgia. Hand therapy is one of our core specialties.
-
How many visits will I need?
The number of visits depends on your specific condition, goals, and how your body responds to treatment. Your therapist will discuss a recommended frequency and estimated duration during your initial evaluation and adjust the plan as you progress.
Direct Access to Physical Therapy
Texas is a direct-access state, which means you can seek physical therapy services without first obtaining a physician's referral. Research published by the American Physical Therapy Association has shown that direct access can reduce overall healthcare costs and speed recovery. If your condition requires further medical evaluation, your therapist will coordinate with the appropriate physician.
